Dentures

If you are missing most or all of your natural teeth, it can be difficult to eat and speak properly.  A custom denture can restore your bite, your self-confidence, and even your quality of life.  Our team of dentists in Lake Charles, LA, can craft traditional or implant-supported dentures to restore your smile.

Benefits of Dentures

Tooth loss can lead to significant oral health problems and quality of life issues. Gaps between teeth can lead to bone loss and further tooth loss, which can eventually impede your ability to eat comfortably. Once you have been fitted with a custom traditional denture or partial denture at our Lake Charles dental practice, you can benefit from:

Restored Oral Function

Proper chewing requires that teeth interlock snuggly when the jaws are closed. This is known as occlusion, and tooth loss can negatively affect this important oral function. Dentures restore bite balance, reducing your risk of developing uncomfortable jaw conditions.

More Youthful Facial Features

Missing teeth are associated with advanced age. Beyond addressing gaps in your smile, a full or partial prosthetic can ensure that your cheeks do not appear sunken-in. If you are looking for a treatment that can leave you looking several years younger, custom dentures might be right for you.

Improved Speech Clarity

Teeth play an important role in speech function. Following the placement of your denture at one of our dental offices, you may notice that speaking becomes easier and clearer.

Boosted Self-Confidence

Living with missing teeth can be embarrassing. A high-quality full or partial denture can give you the ability to speak and chew with confidence. Our custom prosthetics are definitely a cause for smiling.

Traditional vs. Implant-Supported Dentures

Traditional dentures are removable. They rest on your gums and depend on a combination of denture adhesive and suction to remain in place. Although this provides a level of stability that can allow you to enunciate and eat soft or finely chopped foods, traditional dentures can shift out of place.

Implant-supported dentures are secured directly to implants that are surgically placed in your jaw. This keeps your dentures in place at all times, regardless of what you choose to eat. Dental implants also provide stimulation to your jaw to prevent the atrophy that follows tooth loss. As a result, implant-supported dentures need far fewer adjustments than traditional dentures.

What If You Are Only Missing a Few Teeth?

Dentures are only recommended following considerable tooth loss. If you have lost one or a few consecutive teeth, you may be a better candidate for a dental bridge. An individual lost tooth can be replaced using a crown and dental implant. However, if you are missing a significant portion of your upper or lower dental arch, a partial denture is the better option.

Take a look at how a partial denture repairs your smile...

Custom-Designed Restorations

Both partial and complete dentures are custom-tailored to fit the unique specifications of your mouth. In the case of partials, this means designing the prosthetics around your remaining natural teeth.

The Added Benefits of Dental Implants

If you are dissatisfied with the performance of your removable denture, consider stabilizing it with dental implants. These small metal posts are placed in the jaw, replacing missing tooth roots and allowing your false teeth to feel and function like natural teeth. This unique restoration also prevents the jawbone atrophy that follows tooth loss, is gentler on your gums, and better protects your overall oral health.

Our practice in Lake Charles, LA, works with an experienced oral surgeon who can place your implants. We can coordinate all other aspects of your implant care.

Candidacy Considerations

Unfortunately, not all our patients qualify for implant-supported dentures. Since they involve a surgical procedure, candidates must be in good overall health and non-smokers. Certain conditions like uncontrolled diabetes can increase your risk of complications so make sure to go over your medical history with our dentist to ensure your safety.

Candidates must also have sufficient jawbone density to support traditional implants. If you have experienced jawbone recession from long-term tooth loss, you may first require a bone grafting procedure. Alternatively, you may want to consider All-on-4® treatment, a technique that takes advantage of your remaining bone tissue with just four implants (as opposed to the traditional six to eight). All-on-4 implants stabilize a complete denture and can help you avoid preparatory procedures. To find out what treatment you qualify for, schedule a consultation today.

How Much Do Dentures Cost?

The cost of a traditional denture at our Lake Charles dentistry practice generally ranges between $1,100-$2,000. This type of denture is typically covered–at least to some extent–by insurance.

For implant-supported dentures, you can expect the costs to be much higher because treatment is more complex and includes oral surgery. Although the denture might be covered by insurance, implants are considered elective. However, the benefits and long-term savings that come with implant-supported dentures make the price a worthy investment.

We take most major insurance plans. We also accept financing through CareCredit®, allowing you to make affordable monthly payments to cover the cost of treatment.

Maintenance and Aftercare

General tips for maintaining the integrity of your dental appliance include:

Overnight Denture Care

If you have a removable denture, you'll need to take it out each night and place it in a glass of water. Placing the prosthetic in water ensures that the base material maintains its proper size and shape.

Denture Cleaning

Cleaning your false teeth is easy. Simply brush the prosthetic with water using a soft-bristled toothbrush. There are also denture cleaning solutions that you can purchase.

Brushing and Flossing

Implant-supported dentures are often not removable. They should still be brushed twice a day as you would brush your natural teeth. Most convenience stores offer floss threaders that can be used to remove food particles from beneath your implant-supported denture.

Regular Dental Care

False teeth require periodic adjustments to account for changes to your gums. If you already visit our Lake Charles dental practice for check-ups and cleanings, your dentist can use those visits to ensure that your denture is still fitting properly. Dentures do not last forever. After several years, it may need to be replaced.

Denture FAQ

How long will my dentures last?

With proper care, your dentures can last for 15 years or more. It is important to remember that your restoration may wear over time, but if you follow proper care instructions, it can last for years to come.

Do dentures hurt?

No. If your dentures are hurting you or causing irritations, it is important to call your dentist. They can make adjustments to your dentures to eliminate the irritations or explore what may be causing you pain.

Do I still qualify for dentures if I have gum disease?

It is important to have a healthy foundation for your dentures, so you will need to undergo treatment for any oral health issues like gum disease, infections, or decay before you receive dentures. We provide comprehensive treatments to help you achieve a healthy, functional, and beautiful smile.

If you have any further questions, please give us a call or send us a message.

Dr. Ardoin and his whole staff go above and beyond to do a great job! I know I am in good hands when I am there. They always ask if I'm having any issues or mouth pain and work until they resolve the issue/pain. Ginger is so sweet, it is like talking to a long-time friend when I see her to get my teeth cleaned. She is a great asset to the team! Over the last year, Ginger even checks my blood pressure before any work is started. Wonderful dental work, fantastic employees...you just cannot go wrong by calling on Dr. Ardoin's office for your dental needs.

It has been more years than I can count since my last dentist appointment. The last three, with three different dentist, did not go well. I did not have any confidence in them and did not go back to them. Two broken teeth last week changed my situation to a have to. I called Lake Area Dentistry last Thursday and was given an appointment for the following Monday. I was so satisfied with Dr. Price, he saved my two teeth, I scheduled my next appointment for Friday to get more much needed work done. Thank you Dr. Price and Lake Area Dentistry! Good people!
